Foundry Business and Market Trend Report | September 2023

October 31, 2023

Key Takeaways:

22/28nm Capacity Expansion Updates:

  • The capacity expansion for global 22/28nm was initially forecasted to grow by 15% to 20% in Y2024 and Y2025.
  • However, due to the global economic downturn and subdued consumer demand, foundries have postponed the expansion plans. The revised rate for capacity expansion has been adjusted to 10% to 15% for the same period.

Nvidia’s Share on UMC’s Silicon Interposer Updates:

  • In September 2023, Nvidia emerged as the primary client for UMC's Si-interposer, commanding approximately 70-75% of the total capacity, with Enflame following closely at around 16-18%.
  • Anticipating stability, we project that Nvidia's share will remain largely unchanged until UMC implements an increase in Si-interposer capacity in the first half of 2024.

Huawei OLED DDI Demand Updates:

  • With the strength of Huawei’s return in the global smartphone market, we expect Huawei’s OLED DDIC demand to deliver a strong growth in Y2024 with 60~70mn OLED DDIC demand from 30~40mn units in Y2023.

MediaTek 5G AP Shipment Updates:

  • After the continued inventory correction from 4Q22 to 3Q23, we believe the inventory level of the low-end 5G AP may return to a healthy level in since 4Q23 and MediaTek may start to promote its new low-end 5G AP – D6100+.
